Cortesi superior at NRHA-G Open Breeders Futurity 4-years-old
16 October 202316/10/2023 – History was made during the Open finals of the NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity for 4-year-old horses concluded Saturday night in the Ostbayernhalle in Rieden-Kreuth (GER), to start with the € 87.780 added L4 final, counting 16 entries in total. The level of excitement increased towards the end of the competition with 4 more entries to go, starting with Bernard Fonck (BEL) and The Spook Is Dun [Spooks Gotta Whiz] owned by Fabio Cerantola. The run in was not spectacular but Fonck compensated this amply in the performance of the other maneuvers, in particular the circles, and the bar was set at 225,0. The next entry was Grischa Ludwig (GER) with Chic Weasel [Chic Magnetic] owned by George Wiedenhofer. Though the pair performed well, the stops could have been a little bit more powerful. Ludwig marked a 223,0. The same score was posted by the second last entry, Arnaud Girinon (FRA) with Flexing Guns N Town [Hollywoodstinseltown] owned by Anna Scheiflinger. All eyes were now set on the last entry: Manuel Cortesi with July Joe Snap [Master Snapper] owned by Roberto Cuoghi and Eleutorio Arcese who had taken the lead in the preliminary round by marking a 225,5. It was to be expected that this combination had more to offer. Earlier this year Cortesi and July Joe Snap claimed the NRHA L4 European Open Futurity Champion title by marking a 232,0. Like Fonck, Cortesi was not very strong in de run in, but once starting to turn in the spins there was no doubt at all that this pair had fully accepted the challenge. The circles were spectacular and the powerful stops en rollbacks completed the pattern resulting in a magic 233,0 score, the highest score ever marked on European soil.
Posting a 217,5 Franziska Wallner (GER) piloted Captain Chex Sparrow [Smooth Move Chex] owned by Heidi Wallner to the € 36.960 added L3 Open Futurity Champion title. Reserve honors, posting a 217,0, were for Gunnaceemerock [Gunnatrashya] owned by Daniel Straumann and ridden by Andrea Costa (ITA). The third step of the podium, postin a 216,5, was taken by Psychokiller [Tinseltownsmokingun] owned by Daniela Fuith and ridden by Klaus Lechner (AUT).
The L2- and L1 finals deserve separate attention because once more history was made.
