Tribute to a great sportsman
15 January 202515/01/2025 -Not only the Dutch Cutting community has reacted with dismay on the notification of death of Dutch Cutting trainer and -rider Paul Derrez; the European Cutting community reacted with shock as well.
In both the Netherlands and Europe Paul Derrez wrote history. Paul was one of the very first pioneers that introduced the by then on the European continent hardly know Cutting discipline in Europe. A real cowboy! In part because of his unbridled dedication, the discipline has grown into a full-fledged discipline on our continent, practiced and loved by many.
In 2001 Paul founded the National Cutting Horse Association of the Netherlands (NCHAN), an official NCHA USA affiliate. His goal was to organize NCHA USA approved shows. The NCHAN also valued cooperation with neighbouring countries. A beautiful example of this cooperation is the well-known Low Land Cutting Tour. A series of show alternately organized in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Paul not only loved to share his passion for the sport with many, but also his valuable knowledge. Respect for- and the welfare of the horse were highly valued by him. Paul was always willing to advise and help people, even at shows at which he competed himself. In his eyes there were no rivals. His setting was that every rider, provided with the right help, should be able to show a nice run. And he loved to contribute to that.
That was Paul: driven, motivated, disciplined, honest, inspiring and loyal, but above all friendly and a true sportsman.
Paul Derrez passed away on Sunday January 12 at the age of 72.
